Description
This is a geographic style Underground map on paper, issued by the Metropolitan Railway. It shows the Underground group lines overprinted in blue and the Metropolitan Railway overprinted in red. Stations are marked by circles, with only one circle used to represent an interchange between lines, station names are all printed in black. The Metropolitan Railway is shown in its entirety, however it is not to scale with the rest of the lines, and the section to Verney Junction and Brill has been compressed in order to fit it onto the map. The branch between Rayners Lane and Ealing Common is only indicated by an arrow, possibly because Rayners Lane Station has been positioned too far to the East on this map because of the compression, and the line will not easily connect with Ealing Common, which has been drawn to scale and is therefore further to the West. Some of the Underground lines are drawn in their entirety, but many of them are ended prematurely, with an arrow used to indicate the continuation of a line. There is one Metropolitan Raiwlay extension under construction marked on this map between Preston Road and Stanmore, it is indicated by a red broken line. However there is an amendment sheet attached to this map announcing that the line is now open. There is also a Piccadilly line extension under construction to Cockfosters, this is not shown, but there is an arrow showing that the line is being extended. Neasden & Kingsbury Station has been renamed Neasden and Down Street Station is no longer shown after its' closure, however York Road Station which closed in September 1932 is still marked on this map. Geographic features such as Exhibition and football grounds are marked in red, and roads, the River Thames and parks are also included, outlined in grey. The Chiltern Hills have been drawn as a prominent feature on this map and the site of golf courses have been indicated by a red flag symbol. Main line railways routes are marked with grey lines, however some of the lines end abruptly, probably caused by the geographical inaccuracy, especially in the area around Hampstead. This map has a red border, with the title at the top, a reference key is in the top right hand corner of the map, the general managers name appears in the bottom right hand corner. On the reverse there are details about London theatres, shops and stores, main line railway connections, and places of interest. There are also descriptions and pictures of villages and towns served by the Metopolitan Railway, and information about how the 'Metro' serves London. The front cover is green and has the Metropolitan Railway logo as a heading.
